Important: Please watch the movie ahead of time. Movie Club is a discussion group only.
The May movie: Raging Bull, directed by Martin Scorsese, starred Robert De Niro, with Joe Pesci and Kathy Moriarty in breakout roles.
The original screenplay was by Mardik Martin, then reworked by Paul Schrader, and finally reworked again by Scorsese and De Niro.
Nominated for 8 Oscars, it won two, for Best Actor and Best Editing.
The film was reviewed at its release in 1980 by Vincent Canby for the New York Times: “It’s exceedingly violent as well as poetic and, finally, humane in the way of unsentimental fiction that understands that a life – any life – can only be appreciated when the darkness that surrounds it is acknowledged. There’s scarcely a minute in ”Raging Bull” that isn’t edged by intimations of mortality…
…The entire film is played at such high pitch it may well exhaust audiences that don’t come prepared. And, at the heart of the film, there is the mystery of Jake himself, but that is what separates ”Raging Bull” from all other fight movies, in fact, from most movies about anything.”
This film can be streamed for free on Hoopla with your Library Card, and free with ads on YouTube and PLEX. There are also 8 DVDs available for checkout in the Library system; 2 of those are here in Corning, one of those is Blue-Ray.
