SUMMARY:Adult Book Club: “The Mighty Red” by Louise Erdrich
DESCRIPTION:This month’s book will be The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich (384 pages). \nAbout the book: In Argus\, North Dakota\, a collection of people revolve around a fraught wedding. Human time\, deep time\, Red River time\, the half-life of herbicides and pesticides\, and the elegance of time represented in fracking core samples from unimaginable depths\, is set against the speed of climate change\, the depletion of natural resources\, and the sudden economic meltdown of 2008-2009. How much does a dress cost? A used car? A package of cinnamon rolls? Can you see the shape of your soul in the everchanging clouds? Your personal salvation in the giant expanse of sky? \nIn this stunning novel\, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award–winning author Louise Erdrich tells a story of love\, natural forces\, spiritual yearnings\, and the tragic impact of uncontrollable circumstances on ordinary people’s lives. \nAbout the Author: Louise Erdrich\, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa\, is the award-winning author of many novels as well as volumes of poetry\, children’s books\, and a memoir of early motherhood. Erdrich lives in Minnesota with her daughters and is the owner of Birchbark Books\, a small independent bookstore. \nNOTE: Next month’s Adult Book Club will take place on May 2\, the first Friday of the month. \nThe Adult Book Club meets in-person at the Library on the second Friday of each month. If you have questions about the Book Club\, please email Linda Reimer: reimerl@stls.org \nCheck our calendar for future dates and book selections.

SUMMARY:Library Read-In : In Support of Libraries
DESCRIPTION:Join your friends and neighbors in a show of support for Libraries by gathering together to quietly reading collectively.\nBring a favorite book\, or discover a new favorite book on our shelves. Read a physical book\, an eBook\, or listen to an audio book (with headphones\, please).\nIn light of the government shut down of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)\, it is more important than ever to demonstrate your support for Libraries and their role on our communities.Participating in the Library Read-In is another good way to Celebrate National Library Week\, April 6 through 12.\nYou can use the following hashtags when posting to social media:  #ssclreadin    #readinforlibraries   #showupforlibraries \nIf you cannot attend in person\, you can join our Zoom to see how things are going in the Library. \nEarn Bonus ‘Love Your Library’ Points: Please call your elected representatives and urge them to undo this egregious action by the administration\, and to restore funding and staff to the IMLS.\nLibraries are so much more than books\, they provide access to resources for individual growth and development\, and are essential to healthy communities.\nThis is not a partisan issue. \nBelow are the phone numbers for our elected representatives in Congress:\nSenator Chuck Schumer: (202) 224-6542\nSenator Kirsten Gillibrand: (202) 224-4451\nCongressman Nick Langworthy: (202) 225-3161\nThe Congressman’s Corning Office: (607) 377-3130

SUMMARY:Bookbinding with Wynn Yarrow\, Part 5 : Create Final Project
DESCRIPTION:This series of six classes on bookbinding processes examines the historic and contemporary traditions of the art\, provides a foundation in bookbinding skills\, and gives students the opportunity to engage their hands and minds. \nPeople taking this class are requested to take all six classes\, as each class builds upon and reinforces things learned in the other classes; if you cannot commit to attending all six classes\, we ask that you not sign up. (Registration for this event series is now closed.) \nDiscover contemporary trends in bookbinding by viewing examples of artists’ books. Learn how foundational skills are combined in novel ways. “Think with paper” to design a book format you will create for your final project\, considering how book format and book content are connected. \nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes. \nAbout the instructor: I live in the Southern Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. My studio is in my home. I paint local forest and garden landscapes representing human connection to the natural world. Creative artist residencies provide additional inspiration and exposure to new natural ecosystems. Learn more on Wynn’s website: wynnyarrow.com
