Akua Lezli Hope learned about Juneteenth through other Black employees of Corning Incorporated, who hailed from other parts of the USA where it was celebrated. She joined the effort to create Juneteenth commemorations in Corning, NY, beginning in 1993, performing her poetry in Centerway Square.

This reading of her original work on the themes of civil rights and freedom is a continuation of those observances. Akua will be holding the reading over Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89793752976?pwd=eWZaK2lmK05laWNCRnFPNWxmazRuQT09
